As many of you may know by now our mother "JLO" passed away early Sunday afternoon at home.

After an almost 4 year battle with Ovarian Cancer my mother while surrounded by her family, peacefully drifted away to her much deserved rest.

Those of us who knew mom will miss hear dearly, but we take comfort in knowing that she always lived her life to the fullest and never took a day for granted.

Thank you all for your love, support, prayers and good thoughts over the past weeks, months and years. While we are all devestaed with our loss please know that TEAM JLO will continue the fight against Ovarian Cancer to honor the memory of an increadible woman.

Mom's Latest Update

Mom was admitted to Rahway hospital last Wednesday due to dehydration and other issues which we thought were associated with her chemotherapy treatment. Unfortunately, today we found out that mom's cancer has spread to her colon. Her doctors are working to find the best solution for her at this point. Right now it looks like she will undergo a procedure later this week to place a stint within the colon to prevent it from being blocked completely by the tumor. This will no doubt be followed by a new regiment of chemotherapy.

While this news has hit us all very hard please know that mom is strong and we are all standing by her side. Your continued prayers and good thoughts are much appreciated.

Round One- Done!!!!

Mom had her first treatment today with her two new chemos. She did great and is really fighting against some pretty crappy lingering side effects from the previous chemo. Daily she's been dealing with more or less constant aching in her side where the disease has apparently spread. Her docs tell us that these two chemos will stop the pain and stop the growth of any new tumors.

Avastan and Cytoxan it is

Mom went to the doc today and after reviewing her reports from the last scan he's put her Avastan and Cytoxan. With the combination of these two her doctor hopes to stop and further growth of any tumors.

Mom Update!!!!!

It's been about five months since our last post on the blog. For the first part of the last few months mom's fight was going in the right direction. We came through our 3^rd Annual Teal Night For Life at the Olive Branch again with almost $3000.00 in donations. A great time was had by all. In April we took part again in the Sandy Sprint 5K with the Sandy Rollman Ovarian Cancer Foundation. After the race we had a great picnic in Fairmount Park with family and friends. One highlight of the race was mom’s grandson Scott Ricci finishing first in his age group and 5^th over all in the race. We’re all very proud of him.

Not too long after the 5k mom had received news that although her CA-125 was in the safe zone her CAT scan has produced some crappy results with growths on lymph nodes and her liver. For the past few months she has been fighting strong with a new chemo called Taxotere. It slowed her down a bit at times, but she kept pushing and had a nice vacation in LBI just a few weeks ago. One funny story to come out of this however is that on the day she got the bad news she look at my father and said...."I am going out right now and getting a lap top...I am done using facebook on my phone.........I deserve it" The very next day she went out and bought a new laptop. Since then she's been surfing the Facebook highway day in and day out.

Tonight we found out that the last three treatments have not been successful and the cancer has actually grown. It is still on her lymph nodes, has grown a bit on her liver, and is also now presenting itself in a new place within her abdomen. As you would expect she is quite upset, but her resolve to fight this damn disease has not wavered and she'll continue to fight fight fight fight.

Mom, Dad and Nanny are going to see her doctor Monday morning to discuss a new plan of attack. We will be sure to keep you updated on her progress and hope to have some good news over the next few months. If there is one thing we know about our mother she is stubborn. She gets something in her mind and it just has to be that way. That being said we know she’ll overcome this hurdle. She’ll do what it takes to get the job done and then she’ll sit down and have a tall glass of wine to celebrate.

The Olive Branch Bar and Resturant of New Brunswick NJ will be hosting our 3rd Annual Teal Night For Life on Friday April 17, 2009. The doors for the event will open at happy hour and go on through the night.

Last year we raised just around $3000.00. Let's see if we can do it again.

We're Baaaaaaack!

Happy 2009 everyone! Team JLO is back for another year of family, friends, and fundraising! Many of you know that towards the end of 2008, Mom beat another round of cancer yet again. So I believe the official tally stands at MOM - 4, CANCER - O. She continues her chemo treatments on a monthly basis until the doc feels she can take some time to truly heal for a while.

This year, TEAM JLO is bringing back the SUPER BOWL POOL. There will be several opportunities as several different pools will be circulating NJ. One in North Jersey with Andrew, another in Central with Chuck and Dad, and another in Central/South with Gil and Tina. It will be $5 per box. Half of the proceeds will go directly to the Sandy Rollman Ovarian Cancer Foundation, while the other half gets split among the winners! Here is the payout plan:

1st Quarter - $25

2nd Quarter - $50

3rd Quarter - $75

4th Quarter - $100

If you win multiple quarters, you'll win those designated prize amounts.

Team JLO wants to thank all of you who have supported us this year. Whether you donated money, came out to one of our events or ran with us yesterday we appreciate your effort. This year we raised over $7000.00 with some outstanding matching donations. Andy and I are already thinking that next year's goal will be atleast $10,000.00. But we have a little while to rest before we get going on next years campaign.

I want to thank Buddy and Emily for spearheading the great post race picnic. With all of our chefs on hand we had a wild variety of food and as always ....JARTS..

As I said we are looking to the future already and we're looking to expand the reach of TEAM JLO.

Some ideas we're just talking about at this point for next year are

Super Bowl and NCAA B-BALL Pools
Collecting money on street corners and foodstore fronts
2 Poker Tournaments
Auctions
Holding Awareness events at local fairs/sporting events and alike

These are just a few ideas we're kicking around. We're also looking to do more work with the Kaleidoscope of Hope Ovarian Cancer Foundation out of Central NJ.

Mom had her 2nd Round of Chemo today. She had been doing so great aside from being a bit tired. Her blood counts were all great today. She has also started to watch her granddaughter Elie a few afternoons a week. Elie loves going to Mom Mom and Pop Pops.

A HUGE SUCCESS!!!!!!!!

The 2nd Annual Teal Night For Life held last night at the Olive Branch Bar and Restaurant in New Brunswick NJ was an enormous success. I conjunction with the TEAM JLO 2nd Annual Poker Tournament held at New Pak Inc we were able to raise over $3000.00. Final totals are still coming in as we are still receiving donations at this time for the event. When we have a grand total we'll be sure to post it up.

A great time was had by all as Boolily performed and excellent show and as my folks danced the night away. I would like to thank all of you who came from near and far to support our cause. I would also like to extend a special thanks to Doug Schneider for hosting the event yet again. Without your support this would not be possible. We'll see you all at the 5K on the 26th

Doxil It Is

Mom started her new chemo yesterday. This time she's taking a chemo called Doxil. It sounds like it's going to be a bumpy ride with this one, but mom seems up for the fight. Apparently when innitally administering Doxil the nurses watch you closely in the first few minutes for breating difficulty. Mom said "How do you know if I am having trouble" and the nurse replied "You'll stop breathing and your face turns red" At least they are subtle about it. Anyhow, mom made out pretty good yesterday. She was a bit tired last night we had to give her a shot of Elie and Kemo (our dog) which always cheers her up.
On another note, dad had to leave town this morning for Florida first thing because his father passed away yesterday. It seems like the $#%! always hit's the fan at the worst times. Dad's doing ok, but we know he wants to be here with mom. He'll be back by Sunday so until then we'll hold the fort down.

BACK TO WORK

We received word today that as we knew mom's cancer levels were rising although slower than before which is great. Unfortunately it seems it's gone up enough now where Dr. Canavan wants to put mom back on Chemotherapy. Mom's doc told her to come in to the office this coming Monday to talk about what he wants to do, but she insisted I WANT TO START TREATMENT...NOT TALK. So once again she's charging towards her cancer and is ready to take it on. We spent some time this evening at mom's with Kemo her grand dog and of course Elie our daughter. All she kept talking about was how she has to beat it again for her Noah and Scott and Meghan and now Miss Elie. I know she'll do great as she is always a fierce fighter. It's going to be a bumpy road, but there is no one stronger to walk down it than my mom. Please keep her in your prayers and we'll keep you all posted.

"A Silver Lining"

This whole experience is truly a mess. Since day 1 when Mom was diagnosed, it's nothing but bad news piled on top of bad news. A few months ago we thought we received even more bad news when Mom's numbers were going up again. If the tests were accurate then this would mean that she'd have cancer for a fourth time which would likely mean more chemo.

Thankfully, we've gotten what some might consider "good news". Mom had a CAT Scan recently that showed up negative. Dr. Canavan said that there was no visible signs of anything growing or developing on or near any major organs. This means a few things. First it means that if her original CA125 test was accurate, whatever cancer is growing is so small and insignificant that the Doc really sees no need to worry right away. Secondly it means that she can stay off Chemo, at least for another couple of weeks which is a VERY good thing. Her body will continue to recover and get stronger with each day. In short, among all this bad news, her recent CAT Scan was definitely good news...a silver lining in the midst of chaos.

Mom continues to battle like the "bad ass" she is and will be ready to give cancer another beat down if necessary. We continue to be proud of her as I am sure you all are. Make sure you read the posts down below about our two major fundraising events... the Poker Tournament, and the Teal Night for Life both on April 5th. She would greatly appreciate you coming out if you are free that day. Hope to see you there!!

Friends and Family

I just want to thank you all for your support throughout the fire commissioner election. Although the final result was not in our favor, we had a tremendously strong showing. In fact we brought a record turn out.

This has been one of the greatest learning experiences of my life and it would not have been possible if it were not for some very special people. I hope I don’t leave anyone out, but I want to thank Tanya Hamlett, Rudy Morales, Howie and Carmella Schaneman and Chuck Collins from St. John’s EMS for hitting the streets with me. I want to thank my closest friends, my entire family, all of my aunts and uncles, my mother-in-law, my grandmother, my brothers and epically my mother Janice and my father Gil who stood by me the entire time. Finally, I want to thank my wonderful wife Lauren and my beautiful daughter Elie who gave me the freedom to chase down this challenge and to take a risk that very few ever do. They continue to be my motivation and my greatest supporters.

While some of you may not be happy with the results, please find solace in the fact that it's not the outcome that is important, but it's how hard you worked to get there. At the end of the day I can rest easy and say we ran a clean, positive, tough campaign. I put my heart into it and got out much more than I gave. For that I am thankful most.

Former Candidate for Fords Fire Commissioner

Chuck tries on politics and Mom is there to back him up

If you cant tell by the picture, I am running for Fire Commissioner in my town. This is a very small and apparently highly contested office, atleast this year it is. My whole platform is based on keeping the community informed and more involved not to mention providing more training funding for our fire department. This for some reason is an unpopular idea and the local FD is not so crazy about my being involved. I have been told it's because I am an outsider. Hummm why is that so bad.

Well all the drama aside I just want to say my family continues to be my biggest supporters. Last night we had a campaign rally and my family was there by my side. Mom and Nanny however wanted to go around and take out my opponents signs. Arent they bad??? You know mom, always the character. I'll keep you posted as the election is coming up next Saturday.

What's been going on this year????

Here is a little recap for the year since we have last posted.

Mom had an interesteing summer going through chemo while down at LBI, but she was still able to enjoy herself. As the summer came to a close and my wife Lauren's belly grew bigger with our little surprise inside we all looked forward to Andy and Laura's wedding.

Their big day was just amazing. The weather was great, the ceremony was beautiful and food was delicious, but oh yea....Rutgers Lost. Oh we'll we know how that turned out. As the fall moved on actually only several days after the wedding Lauren and I were blessed with our beautiful daughter Elizabeth Clare Lopez "Elie". Mom really enjoyed her fall with her son getting marriend and her newest granddaughter being born. There really was an instant connection between mom and Elie, its so wonderful to see them together.

Since then Lauren and I have learned how to live on minimal sleep. Andy and Laura have learned how to live in minimal space and Gil and Tina are enjoying their new little surprise on the way.......ok, I am just kidding no babies coming....Tina's really gonna kill me for that one.
Gil, Tina and the kids are doing great too. You can find Gil any evening driving all the way up the Turnpike.

WE'RE BACK!!!!!!

It's been almost a year since our last post. I guess we all just got so used to mom doing so well. As some of you know her CA-125 numbers are back up again, but her doc's want to hold off on Chemo for now. Her spirits are great and as she put is "What's the alternative? Give UP?" I think not.

I was just checking out the TEAM JLO website, and it turns out that we are a mere $857 away from reaching our fundraising goal of $5,000 (which puts us at $4143). I can’t help but to imagine what it would mean for our cause if we actually reached our goal.

When Chuck brought up the Sandy Rollman 5K race idea, we picked $5000 as a goal because it was a great number to shoot for, it was certainly more than we’ve aimed for in the past, and because it’s just a nice round number! We never really banked on actually raising the 5K because really it was more about spreading the word and the fact that we knew we could raise a good amount anyway. But now with 48 days left until the race, we could do one of two things; congratulate ourselves and be content with the $4143, or keep pushing for the final $857. I choose the latter.

We all have to keep pushing for our goal because if we think back to December 2005, we all know a woman that could’ve easily given up without little blame. But had made up her mind, and changed all of our definitions of what it means to truly “fight”. And again this past October when Mom was faced with her second bout with cancer in less than a year, she continued to push to reach her goal to survive. It’s our turn to push and fight for her and meet our goal of $5000 for all the reasons we have talked about on countless occasions: to spread the word, for better laws, for those who are battling, and fore those who have lost the fight.

So if you are like me and sometimes put things off until the last minute, well the last minute is here and we need your help. 1ST Annual Teal Night For Life

Last Friday hundreds of devoted family members, friends and co-workers decended upon the Olive Branch Bar and Resturant in New Brunswick. The wonderful management of the OB as well as their incredibe staff truly out did themselves. Most wonderful though, was the oupouring of love and support from all those who came. Our initial estimate of funds we hoped to raise were in the $600-$700 range. When all was said and done we raised $2005.00. There are no words to express how amazing it really was. Thank you again to all those who came, to those who gave and to the wonderful staff at the OB. You made our dream a reality. Now. let's get on and hit $5000.00

Miracle: Part 2

After Wednesday's ice storm settled, I took a walk to Chuck and Lauren's house to get out of the house for a bit. Mom was pretty nervous because we were still waiting to hear back about her CAT SCAN results. The days before and after chemo's or any kind of test are the worst. It's the "not knowing" that really gets to you. But because we've gotten bad news from this test before, I think everyone was a little more on edge than usual. As I was nearing my way home, mom popped her head out of the front door "I'M NORMAL, I'M NORMAL!!!" She was still on the phone with someone from our family sharing the good news, but was yelling down the block like a crazy woman--- a good crazy! She was going on and on about how Dr. Canavan truly couldn't believe he was looking at her SCAN because it looked so unbelievably healthy! I can probably vouch for all of Mom's friend's and family members when I say as soon as we heard this news, it felt like a huge weight was off our chests. THANK GOD!

After Mom had made her phone calls, she couldn't stop praising Dr. Canavan's name. "The man's a saint! He's the BBBBEEEESSSST doctor in the whole world. Even if it doesn't come back, I ain't gonna worry cause I know he'll take care of me!" We later had a few laughs because after she started pouring herself a huge glass of the HACIENDA Merlot I said, "Whether we got good or bad news, you were gonna have a few drinks no matter what huh?" And she couldn't agree more. It was time to celebrate and so she did, rightly so!

What is past, is past. Here's what the near future has in store...

2) March 2nd- Party for OC at the OB! (Details below)
3) April 28th- Sandy Rollman 5K for Ovarian Cancer

So basically we have to never stop praying, continue to raise funds and spread the word to help find better and more efficient OC tests/treatments, and last but certainly not least... PARTY!!!!

Kemo Turns 1 and spends the day with Mom Mom

As many of you know Lauren and I got a dog last April. Mom thought a perfect name for our new addition would be Kemo (figured spelling it Chemo might be too much). Anyhow Kemo has stuck by Mom all year again and again bringing a smile to her face even on the worst days. Now, Kemo doesn't hold a candle do mom's grandkids, but in a pinch he does the job well. It seems like just yesterday we got the news that mom's cancer had returned. As expected mom was devestated as were we all. However I never knew how much she loved that dog until somewhere through her tears she told me to go home and get Kemo...She said "I need my Kemo". That pretty much sums up their relationship. She loves him and I know the feeling is more than mutual. He goes nuts when we say "It's time to go to Mom Mom's House". So, yesterday while Lauren and I were at work mom again spoiled him all day, where he spends most of the day sleeping on her lap as she watches TV. He's quite an impressive puppy....Happy Birthday Kemo....

Mom Finished Last round of Chemo Like a Champ

Just this past Monday mom finished her 6th and final round of chemo. She went through the normal painful Thursdays, but other than that she was her same old normal self. Over the next few weeks she'll go back to the hospital for another scan to reconfirm that there are no masses. She feels great, her doc's say she's doing increadible so things are looking up.

On another note, I know she is very excited about the TEAL NIGHT FOR LIFE at the Olive Branch on March 2nd. She mentioned to me that she hopes that the family can all make it as well as all of our friends and alike. We hope to see you there. It should be a great night. Mom at Andy's Big Night- Brings Ovarian Cancer Together

Last night my brother Andy reached a milestone in his career as a musician. To some a small event, to others in the professions huge. Mom and Dad have been to problably dozens if not a hundred of Andy's concerts where he performed. Last night for the first time and took the stage as the Band Director. Mom loved his performance and Laura his fiance couldnt get over how young he looked up there. It was a bit strange for me also to see my little brother do such an increadible job now that he too is a band director. So, to Andy, BRAVO!!!! on your first concert, and may you have many more just the same.
On another note last night. Mom was in her classic beret that she sports now that her head is well......bald. A woman behind her reached forward to politely ask, "I am sorry but do you have Ovarian Cancer". Mom replied with a "Yes". The women went on to tell of her mother who beat Ovarian Cancer. Mom ended with a "Thank You and "I am going to beat it too". So no where you go, theres someone who knows, someone who has felt its damage, but also someone who knows the fight that it takes. Mom has that fight. Bravo Mom!!!!!

Hawks Come to the Rescue

As you all know by now TEAM JLO is in a full speed ahead fundraising mode. One of the newest components of our fundraising team now comes from mom's alma matter J.P Steven High School in Edison NJ. My wife Lauren is a teacher at J.P and took the lead to encourage the 10th grade class to sponsor TEAM JLO by selling ovarian cancer ribbons. This is only one of many other fundraising efforts that we're embarking on at this point. Very shortly we'll be reaching out to business for their support as well as seeking sponsors to cover the cost of TEAM JLO shirts that every runner on our team will wear. GREAT NEWS!!

Back on October 2nd we found out again Mom's Cancers level's jumped up to 236. Most of us walking around have some levels in us and the norm range is 1-30. Just a few days prior to Thanksgiving we had found out that it was down to 23....Now,,,,,,,,,drum roll please........................................Yesterday we got word that mom's levels are down to 10. That's just increadible. We're so proud of her and how strong she is. I had made an error in the last post. This was mom's 5th treatment and still has one to go. In celebration of her new low number she went out for dinner with dad and bought Kemo a new toy. Well more from the home front soon.

Tomorrow marks mom's 6th chemo of this round. She continues to fight just as before and she's doing better than ever. Throughout this year however she'll have to have monthly maintaince treatments, but her motto is "whatever I have to do, I'll do". It would be amazing if we were all that strong. This time last year...

I know many of us would rather just put it behind us, but I think it's important to think back one year ago. And think about how mom was doing health-wise, how she was feeling, how she looked... It was not a pretty sight. Everyone of us wanted to think the absolute best outcome, but to be honest it was difficult (sometimes). The good news however, is when we stop remembering the past and start focusing on the present and seeing how well Mom is doing 1 year later. One year after all of those grimm reports, tests, and some jerk gave her only a few months.

At this point Mom is doing great. She just finished her 4th chemo and is set for 2 more treatments every 3 weeks. Aches and pains are really the bulk her side affects, but they don't slow her down for too long. Once she's finished with these next few chemo's the doctor has prescribed one chemotherapy a month for a whole year so that she can knock anything and everything out of her system. And at this point I don't even have to tell you her outlook. She continues with her steadfast ways, and won't let anything get her down... well maybe one thing.. PLEASE TAKE YOUR SHOES OFF WHEN YOU COME IN OUR HOUSE!!! That's about it though!

In the past few weeks, we've had a few additional TEAM JLO Supporters and I know Charlie is going to recognize them in a blog shortly. But I just wanted to ask that in this season of giving, only if you are able to donate just $10/$15 that would surely help us towards our goal. Times are tough, and money is tight (I'm finally starting to learn that with the purchase of my first new car), but life above all is most important. So keep the prayers and good thoughts coming!!

Johanna's Law Passed Today in Congress

I just received word from Robin Cohen from the Sandy Rollman Ovarian Cancer Alliance that Johanna's Law passed in the early hours of the morning today in the last session on the 109th Congress. This was a huge battle fought by a nation wide grass roots effort. Sheryl Silver, the sister of Johanna spearheaded this legislation and 2 years later finally got it through. Thank you to all of you who made calls to your representatives and senators. I know each call helped.

This was a new expierence for me in my life. I have never before had the oppertunity to impact or be involved with legislation, and I must say I loved it.

Thanksgiving Was Great!!!!!!

As you can see Thanksgiving was just wonderful. We had almost the whole family together and man did we eat. The day began with Lauren screaming for me from the kitchen at 5AM. There we found our wonderful 1960's Oven decided that today of all days would be the one to stop working. We however were lucky, and just popped the bird in the oven at my rescue squad around the corner. The whole family pitched in and brought with them all sorts of increadible dishes and kudos to Shelly for that Pumpkin Crisp.....it was so good. We were also very blessed to have Laurens mom, grandmother, great aunt Lilly, and very funy cousin Paul join us. It really was a family affair. Yes, you guessed it we ended out the night with a rousing games of Holdem and Blackjack. Overall it was by far one of the best holidays of my life, mostly because my mom was there. She is doing so well and just finished her 3rd chemo yesterday. Her doc is excited about her progress and honestly would we expect any less of mom? I think not. I hope you all had just as an increadible holiday as we did.

A TRULY HAPPY THANKSGIVING!!!

IT'S AMAZING!! After only 2 rounds of chemo, Mom is back in remission!!!! I called her today to let her know I was on my way home from work, and she answers the phone saying that her counts were down again. When she was first diagnosed, she was originally thought to have needed at least 4 rounds of chemo with maybe even a little extra afterwards "just in case"... but whether Dr. Canavan is a genius, or it was Mom's strong spirit (most likely a combo of both), she's unbelievably back in remission.

This time we pray it will be for good!

Knowing Mom though, she'd probably yell at me for even saying that. It's been her motto since day one that you can only take one day at a time. "If I get it, I get it. I'll beat it like I beat it the last time". It's all about not worrying about tomorrow, while taking care of yourself today.

Please spread the word if you have not yet done so. If you have not yet spoken with Mom, believe me she is so appreciative of everyone's good thoughts, prayers and wishes. This year, Thanksgiving has a whole new meaning!

As you can see in this picture here mom is now just one of the boys. She called me yesterday morning to come over and "bic" her head. The pain of having hair outweighed the ideas of being bald. So, how does she like it you may ask? She loves it. She can finally sleep and wear hat's without pain. She told me she would love to walk around the food store without a hat on just to see people stare...What a nut case. You'll also see mom's fourth and much harier grandchild in the picture. That's KEMO and when Lauren and I got him last year mom thought KEMO was the best name for him. She loves this dog.
So, all's well on the home front and mom's kicking butt.......without hair that is.

Hair, Hair, Everywhere!

Laura slept over on Friday night, so when we woke up, we went downstairs to say, "good morning" to the family. Mom tells me that she was trying to make us English Muffins, but couldn't because when she realized they were covered in hair once she started buttering them. She felt so bad, but it was really such a sweet thought to me. Even in the midst of such a chaotic time, she thinks of us. Anyway, I just thought that was a nice story.

Today was Mom's 2nd round of chemo and everything went swimmingly. Before she started the treatment, they checked her blood, and everything was good and healthy. I was told that she was a little bit more "loopy" cause of the meds for about 3 hours today. But it works out well because in the end, I'm sure Mom doesn't remember too too much of it, and Nanny and Dad get some free entertainment for a few hours.

So back to my original story about the english muffin, you can tell that Mom's situation has been getting pretty "hairy" (sorry... I had to), so to make things a little more manageable, Chuck shaved her down to pretty much nothing. She says her hair (or what's left of it) still is sore, but at least she doesn't have big chunks falling out everywhere. Those of you who have been talking to her know just how gross it has been for her, waking up to a pillow covered in hair. Not a fun time...

Other than that, everything is pretty calm around these parts. We anticipate that Mom will be pretty "up and at em" tomorrow because she generally gets one good day before she starts feeling sick and sore. Both Dad and I will be around the next few days to help out if need be. So for now, keep the TEAM JLO donations flowing and the good thoughts rollin!

Doc says mom looks GREAT!!!!!

Mom had a check up today and the Doc says she looks great. Mom told me the doc said he's going to get her into remission again and keep her there for a long time. She goes back in next Monday for round 2 of Chemo. On the down side, mom's hair is starting the come out a bit, but she's taking it like a champ. I dont know anyone stronger than her.

Janice vs Cancer (Janice 1, Cancer 0)

From 9am-2pm on Monday October 15th, Mom had her first chemotherapy treatment for her second bout with cancer. This 5 hour stint at Dr. Canavan's office was nothing compared to last year when she was stuck for half a week at Rahway Hospital. Funny story... On Monday I was in a pretty somber mood just thinking about Mom and all this crap she's going through so I decided to give her a call during my lunch hour at work. The phone started ringing and I expected to hear that she was probably in a pretty bad mood and couldn't wait to leave. BOY WAS I WRONG.

Mom: Helllloooooo?
Andy: Hey Ma'.
Mom: Whaat? Andrew?
Andy: How are you feeling??
Mom: (mumbling) I feel prrreetty goooddd... they got me puuumped with Benedryl.
Andy: Haha... Great. So you're doing well?
Mom: Yeah I'm fine really. Sittin' here with Nanny. Dad's in the other room...I just feel like I've had a couple shots. I wish I did have a few actually.. Hahah

When I got home Mom was her normal self and had her second dose of chemo when Chuck and Lauren's dog "Kemo" came to pay a visit. Today after work I called home and expected worse, but again I was wrong. She felt a little sore and tired but all in all pretty good. Still cooking and doing her daily routine which as many of you know is a great thing for her. Her spirits are still great and is getting ready to make an appointment with her stylist Jeff in preperation for when her hair starts to thin again. So be on the look out for a couple of bald Lopez's running around in a month or two!

The Strongest Woman I know

Just a few days after celebrating Mom's 6 months of being in remission, we received news that Cancer cells have once again started to grow in her body. Shock...Disbelief...Anger... Sadness... These words can barely even begin to describe how we all felt after hearing this news. In the words of Mom herself, "Crying isn't going to do any good. I'm just gonna have to fight it and beat it like I did the first time!" That's the spirit and state of mind that made her initial recovery possible, and is going to get her through it this time as well.

If there is any "good news" in all of this, it seems that the doctors have caught her cancer in very early stages and will be treatable with several rounds of chemotherapy. And unlike last time, Mom only needs 5 hours of chemo every third Friday as opposed to 2 days straight of chemo every third Friday. Also, she doesn't need to check into a hospital this time. I'm sure she's reeeeaaaalllllllllyyyyyy upset about not having to wear those drafty yet stylish hospital gowns.

More good news is that her cancer cells are not attached to any major organs. Rather, they are growing on lymphnodes located near (not on) her liver and colon. That fact alone makes a big difference.

Mom is the strongest woman I know, and she isn't going to let anything stand in her way of living a happy, normal, and healthy life. She remains inspired by her three grandchildren, her mother, sisters, cousins, friends, children, her incredibly supportive husband, and her new "Grand-dog" Kemo. More recently she tells me that she MUST be healthy for next October when Laura and I are engaged to be married (more news on that to follow!). Mom looks as healthy as ever, and with your good thoughts and prayers is on pace for remission once again. UPDATES AND PICTURES TO COME!

Yes you read it right, as of yesterdays doctor's visit mom is offically in remission. We are all so excited, but I dont think there has ever been a better Mother's Day gift. Mom is off the wall about the good news, and is looking forward to great health ahead. As her doc said, with Cancer your never sure how long remission lasts or maybe if it will last forever, but I know if we all keep praying and hoping she'll be just fine. Thanks for all the prayers and good wishes that contine to come. We hope you all have a great Mother's Day weekend. We know we will. (even though it's bound to be a bit soggy)

JANICE 6- CHEMO 0

So, it's been over a week now and mom is done with her chemotherapy (hopefully for good) but for now. The doc's are happy, and she feels great. She'll be following up with her specialist and getting another CAT, but we are all just so excited to that she is doing so increadibly well.

Last Saturday mom pushed through the day to get though Andy's recitial, while I think it was more difficult for her to let Lauren and I take care of the reception she did a great job. And on that note, Andy was just increadible. I am so proud of him.

Finally Lauren and I have some long awaited news. Yes we're parents. We have an almost 3 month old little puppy ( actaully the most adorable puppy in the world) and his name is......drum roll please.................. Kemo. Yes, it's really a name, it's Hawaiian, but mom loved it. She thought it was great. She actually had a hand in picking the name. Once I can get him to sit still I will get some pictures of him up. Currntly he's passed out on the couch, nobody told me puppies were so much work. But we love him and mom loves him along with everyone that has met him thus far.

A Wrap Up of Relay

Through the contributions of many, my team (The Rutgers University Glee Club) was able to surpass our fundraising goal of over $1000 and topped out at a little over $1100 towards RELAY FOR LIFE. As most of you already know, the Relay happened this weekend, stretching from 6pm on Friday afternoon into Saturday morning at 8am. Many thought that I would be walking straight through the entire time, but that was not the case. The idea was to be on a team so that atleast 2 members from each team had to be on the course at all times. Overall, I probably walked a good 7 or 8 hours and I had an absolute blast. When we weren't walking, we were either watching some awesome live bands, playing games or listening to survivors tell their miraculous tales. And if anybody caught a glimpse of the schedule online, NO I did not participate in the 5am drag queen competition!

By hour 14, members of my teammates and I were hurting and delerious with exhaustion, but we knew we had been a part of something amazing, and that was all we needed! In the end, my team was ranked 6th out of 32 teams in the amount of money we raised, and through your generous donations, I was ranked 5th out of hundreds in the amount raised by an individual. Thank you all and please don't stop learning, asking questions, getting involved and donating money towards the search for a cure. Please support my brother in his quest to raise money for the Sandy Rollman 5k. If you aren't able to donate, please consider joining Chuck in the race just as I have.

AND LASTLY, you all are aware that Mom is doing amazingly well. But what you may have forgotten is that tomorrow (April 10th), mom will have been SMOKE FREE for 4 months so please call her and let her know how proud you are of her. I know she'd love to hear from you.

Friends and Family,

As you all problably know by now my mom Janice is currently battling
ovraian cancer. Actally she is more like kicking the crap out of ovarian
cancer, but all that aside if you know mom you know she's tough, and you
know she'll fight the good fight.

You in past all have received a donation request from from me when I was
running for breast cancer. Well as you now know my cancer focus as
changed, and though breast cancer still needs support I am focusing my
sights on fighting ovarian cancer and rasing money for the cause.

This coming April 29th I will be running in the Sandy Rollman Ovarian
Cancer Foundations 5K Teal Run. Many of you have already offered
donations for my brother Andy's upcoming event, so please do not feel to
need to give again. If however you do feel the need or have no yet
donated this is a great time and a great place to start.

IT'S A MIRACLE

Mom just called me with the best news we have had since this whole cancer nightmare started. She was at the specialists office today and all she could say what "It's a miracle". She said she would have never guessed that 3 months from her first visit mom would be doing so well. From all CAT scans it seems as if the chemo is working like a charm. The next step for mom is to finish her 2 last rounds of chemo, then another scan. At that time the doc said they'll either do another round of chemo, or stop treatment for a while.

Please keep your prayers coming, someone up their must be listening. PRAY PRAY PRAY.

The doc said to my mom...you must really be a fighter.......man if she only knew the half of it.
So, I hope you enjoy the great news as much as we did, and again please keep the prayers coming.

RELAY FOR LIFE

On April 7th-8th, I will be participating in a fundraising event sponsored by The American Cancer Society called RELAY FOR LIFE. This event was created in 1985 by a doctor in Tacoma, Washington to help raise money for his local American Cancer Society office. That first year, he raised $25,000 with the help of friends, family and his community. Today, RELAY FOR LIFE is taking place all around the world and with the help of participants and donors, they are able to raise millions to help fight cancer. But as we all know, it is never enough! There is always somebody in need, and there is always a fight to win.

From 9pm-6am I will be walking with a team of a dozen friends of mine from the Rutgers Glee Club (the choir I sing in at school) on Cook Campus of Rutgers University where this particular event will be taking place. My individual fundraising goal for RFL is $1000. If you would like to help me reach my goal and contribute to the fight against cancer of all kinds, there are a few ways you can help. For a $1 donation, you can purchase a "sun" to honor somebody who has survived, or is currently battling cancer. And for the same price of $1, you can purchase a "moon" and honor someone who has died fighting the disease. For $10, you can purchase "Luminarias" that will light the path of the relay on the evening of the event. There is no minimum or maximum amount that you can purchase. In addition, you can donate directly to the American Cancer Society on their website at http://www.cancer.org. All cancer survivors are invited to kick off the event by walking the ceremonial "first lap" around the relay track.

The only way we can make a difference in this fight is through our actions. Janice 4 - Chemo 0

Mom came home Friday and is doing great. She has been on the tired side, but that's to be expected with four rounds of chemo in her. Her spirits continue to be great and those phone calls from her grandkids always help. There will be more to come.

ROUND 4 IS ALMOST DONE, AND MOM'S MAKING SENSE

Since mom has been undergoing chemotherapy she hasnt always made the most sense of things. Her perspectives have been a bit off, but recently she's come around. For instance I meantioned in my last post about her dieting and revelation that since she's not out of the woods yet, why the hell be on a diet. Just yesterday she was talking to my wife Lauren and said "You know, I was tired after reading, so I slept. I walk through the halls of this hopsital and everyone's sleeping, maybe I should too"

Oh Janice, how your brain has gone to mush. But I must say mom's doing great and she's funnier than ever. Just the other day she was tossing out some of the funniest comments I have ever heard. I was rolling. It will be great to have her home again tomorrow. She is eager to get back to her normal everyday life, and also very much looking forward to Andy's Senior Recital which we'll be posting info about in a few days. It would be great to see you all there. That's all for tonight.

SOME GOOD NEWS

Mom got some good news today. She had her first CAT Scan yesterday since starting chemo, and the doctors say it looked so much better. All of her doctors we're really pleased with the results and she'll need a follow up Scan in 4 months. The next step is for mom to get in to see the specialist and to see what she wants to do.

Mom's feeling great and downed a hot fudge sundae tongiht. I know she'll kill me for putting that up there. For a while she started to pull back from eating a lot. Then when I called her tonight to see if she wanted me to bring up some goodies to the hospital she said "what the hell am i doing? I dont need to diet". " Get me a sundae"
She cracks me up. Well keep the prayers coming. She'll be home Friday and I am sure we'll have more to post soon.

Here comes Round 4

It is hard to believe that it was almost 3 months ago when we first heard the horrible news of mom's cancer. Since then we have been up and down and up and down and up and down and all over. We could not have gotten through any of it without the love and support of our friends and family.

Next Monday mom goes back to the hospital for round 4 of chemo. Though she's not looking forward to it she know's she has to go. They will be doing the first CAT scan since mom started chemo so hopefully we will have some great news about the size of the remaining tumor. Mom mentioned that her doc's might want to go back in a try to remove more tumor, but everything is kind of up in the air right now. She's taking everything day by day.

Just yesterday she took a drive for the day with Leslie and Nanny down to LBI for the day to make sure their pipes didnt burst, and all was well. Theyn enjoyed lunch at Kubels and I am sure mom is eagerly looking forward to getting down there this summer.

Last Saturday Mom had the chance to spend time with some family she has not seen in quite some time. She looked great, she felt great and I know she had a great time. Thank you for making that night not only so special for my Aunt Debbie on her birthday, but also for my mom. I know she loved seeing everyone.

Hey we're back!!!!!!!

So, we've been a bit quiet on the posting front for a little over a week now. Mom is home a week from her 3rd treatment today and doing well. There was a bit of a drop in her Red Blood Cells, but the doc's said that was to be expected. Mom is feeling pretty good these days though still tired at times.

Her hair as you may all know never quite all fell out when her boys shaved their heads. Infact it started to grow again, and it was coming in in some very interesting colors. Red, Black, White. She takes it all like a champ though. What I love best about my mom lately is that she really dosent give a crap what people feel about her hair and how she looks. Her attitude is "Yea..I have cancer...so what...deal with it...I am". She's really amazing. She has yet to wear her wig going out, and she really looks great in a hat and scarf.

Today mom and dad's youngest went to his first job fair. Andy as many of you may know has sort of followed in my footsteps a bit. When I was in college I was the state collegiate president of New Jersey music education organization, Andy is now serving very well in that same position. He's created some amazing programs as president. His latest brainchild which is launching in March is a free music lesson program for any student in new jersey that wants lessons. He's headed for the big time. I am really proud of him. I know he'll be an increadible band director. I spoke to the music supervisor in the district where he is student teaching and he feels that Andy is bound for greatness as well. Nice Job Andy!!!!!!!

Tomorrow Andy performs with the Rutgers Saxophone Quartet at the New Jersey State Music Educators Convention in East Brunswick, I think mom's gonna make it out for that one.

Cancer Shmancer!!

A lot has happened since my last update. Mom went in on Monday to begin round 3 of her chemotherapy treatments and we've received nothing but GOOD news! Today we found out a test that monitors how much cancer is in her has changed drastically for the better! So rather than going into the medical jargin that I don't even understand, the jist of it is that the chemo is working and she's beating it slowly but surely.

I think Mom's getting a little sick of these hospital visits. Crossword puzzles and trashy supermarket magazines probably get old really fast! But if nothing else, she has given up completely on the hospital food! Who can blame her? Every day she has my Uncle Ed or some other fmaily member drop off lunch and dinner. And for those of you who know Ed's cooking, you know she's eating well.

Another good thing is that Mom is now smoke-free for over 2 months and counting!!! Just a little reminder that she quit cold-turkey after over 30 years of continuous smoking! Talk about tough...

And if you haven't read, Senator Menendez has decided to show support for a very important bill that will really make a huge difference in the fight against O.C. (Read the articles below by my brother Charlie to learn more about Johanna's Law and other ways people are trying to make a difference!)

Please continute to visit this site and leave messages. They all get printed up and show to Mom. Also if you haven't yet, give her a call. She's got a lot of time on her hands these days and would love to have a friendly chat.

DO YOU WANT TO HELP ?????

As you may have seen from some of my earlier posts I am currently working to help pass a piece of legislation known as Johanna's Law. This law would create a national awareness campagin about ovarian cancer and other women's cancers. Ovarian being one of the toughest to deal with because by the time you find out you have it it's already ususally in the advanced stages.

I am working as a member of the Alliance for Women's Cancers Awareness. My main goal is to contact as many Congressmen/women and Senators who are not signed on to support this bill and to convince them to do so. There is a lot to be done. Fortunatly for me all of my Congressmen and Senators in New Jersey are suporters, but many others around the country are not. I have already contacted some family and friends around the country who live in states that dont have 100% from their elected officals. Together we can make a difference. Hi, this is Janice. I've been reading the website each time it's been updated...that is when someone prints it out for me! I am not a computer person. I'm feeling great and today I will be seeing my grandchildren this afternoon. Can't wait!

Anyway, I want to take this time to thank everyone who has sent cards, called, sent flowers, gifts, their thoughts and prayers, and cooked dinner for my family while I'm under the weather. The biggest thank you goes to my husband, three sons, two daughter-in-laws, two sisters, and especially my mother who has been taking care of me since day one!

Look Out World, Janice Is Back Behind The Wheel

Just a quick update today. Mom just called as she is on her way back from her Doc's office. Now 7 weeks after her surgury she has been cleared to drive again. Look Out.... When I was talking to her a minute ago she was also very excited that she could now resume more of her old daily tasks. She was most excited becasue she is now allowed to vaccume. What a weirdo. Anyhow, I figured you all should know she's doing well and more and more everyday back to her old self. Now atleast she cant yell at dad for missing spots on the carpet....

Well, I have just returned from a 3 day stay in the woods with the 5th graders in my school. While away I stayed in close communication with mom, and I am happy to say she is feeling pretty good. Her bloodwork came back from the doc yesterday and her doc feels that everything is looking good. Her spirits remain high, and although her hair is short, and that's a large thanks to Uncle Charles who I heard was dying to shave mom's head for years she still has a head of hair while her 3 boys are bare up top.

This weekend mom and dad are heading down to Gil's to spend the day with the kids. If you only could see her face when she see's them. I remember the first time she went to her oncologist, she told him...and I quote "Listen, I have 3 grandkids I am living for...I mean I love my husband, but ..I have 3 grandkids I am living for." She loves those kids more than anything. It's really great to see her spend time with them.

Well, that's all for today, but I want to thank everyone for taking the time to reply and send such warm messages. I want to encourage everyone to call mom to say hello. Dont worry about waking her, if she's sleeping she turns off her phone and if she isnt up for talking she just wont answer. Dont take it personally. So please continue to call and email.

Mom and Her 3 Bald Boys

Mom came home on Friday after finishing her second round of chemotherapy on Thursday and she's doing just great. She is feeling pretty tired and somewhat sore, but that is certainly to be expected. Regardless, it's still be a chore to keep her down and not wiping the counters or helping out in some way. She'll never stop, but I think that's why she's going to beat it...

So ever since day one when we heard mom would probably lose her hair, Gil, Charlie and I have agreed to shave our heads too. On Thursday night I got a text message from Charlie saying, "Get ready... tomorrow is SHAVE day!" At this point mom's hair was really thinning and falling out from the chemo, and she was sick and tired of waking up with hair all over the pillow. So when Mom came home from the hospital, Charlie was waiting at home (already bald!) with his shears and electric razor. He did a real nice job on Mom, getting her as close to bald as she was ready for at the moment. About an hour later, I was student teaching and received a picture on my camera phone of mom's new haircut and Chuck's bald head. I knew my time would be soon. About a half hour later I received another picture from Gil with a message saying "Two down, one to go!". 6 hours later...

(((The picture that was here showed a picture of Mom, Gil, Chuck and myself all bald. Had to take it down but will be replaced as soon as we are all together again and can take a new shot!)))

We love you Mom and will do anything for you. This is just a small silly way of expressing that. 2 Rounds down, 4 more to go! Already a 1/3 done!

Same Old Janice

As many of you know, today was Mom's second day of her second round of chemotherapy and she is doing just fantastic! Yesterday went off without a hitch and having just finished her second treatment only a few hours ago, things went just as well today. All of her blood-word has been coming back with positive results and her doctors continue to be satisfied with her progress both mentally and physically.

If I can think of one thing that is different this round of chemo from her first round, I'd say Mom is much more independent and confident during her stay at Rahway. I think the first time around she was quite nervous not knowing what would come of the chemo, but now having gone through it once she has a much better idea of what's in store. I can truly say she is the same old Janice nowadays. The only difference is she's got a hip new "do" and she hangs out at a hospital four days every three weeks.

Oddly enough, over the past few days I (Andy) haven't thought much about putting up a new post on the site because she's been so "normal" lately that you can almost go a day without even thinking about her cancer. (Just talk to her on the phone for 5 minutes and you'll see exactly what I mean!) But I think the more normal things get, the better! Not only for Mom, but for the whole family. My best friend's mother (Kathy Monaco) told me a very true statement the other night when she said "If your Mom has cancer, your whole family's got it." Ain't it the truth??? I have no doubt that none of us can truly relate to the feelings Mom has felt these past few months. But what I do know is that we've felt every bit of pain, fear, hope, and sheer joy just as she has in our own ways. And that is the quality our family has that makes me proud to be a part of it.

While doing some surfing in an effort to learn more about Ovarian Cancer I came across a great PSA (public service announcment) for Ovarian and Gynelocigal Cancers sponsored by the Ovarian Cancer National Alliance. I have writen them to ask when it will be made public outside of the internet. Click HERE to see the TV spot add. It's really nice, yet unless it reaches women and doctors no one will be the wiser. Now of course I am being a bit hyper sensitive, and I am sure it is out there. I will keep you posted on their reply to my concerns. Please pass the link for the TV spot on to EVERYONE you know. Mom Gears Up For Round 2

This Monday mom will head back to Robert Wood Johnson-Rahway for her second round of chemotherapy. She is going in with sprits high and the best possible attitude. Recently she has been let out of her cage since meeting with her doc this week when he cleared her to go out and about as long as she didnt push it too much. Right away she hit the food store, bank, and several other favorite spots, yet she is being driven around by her mom or my dad. Tonight she is heading out for a long awaited dinner at Dick's Doc a local seafood place in Metuchen and on her way home she told me eariler she'll be stopping for an ice cream sundae. If it wasnt for this cancer thing it would sound like she's living the high life.

All in all mom is feeling good. We know she'll knock the hell out of this round of chemo too. Her first week home afterwards is bound to be a fun one just like the last round, but she gets through it and on to better days. Please continue to keep my mom in your prayers and thoughts over the next few days as she goes head to head once again with Chemo. Thank you all for your continued support. We could not get through this without such an increadible family and such amazing friends. Thanks and we love you.

Rep Barton Dosent Want To Move

I spoke to Rep. Barton's (Tx) Health L.A yesterday with limited success. The bottom line is that he dose not want to move until he gets NIH reform. His aide informed me that it's like a pie, and youhave to fix the pie before adding any more pieces (Johanna's Law). When I asked if she could give me a time frame for the passing of the reform she told me almost if i were a child "that's not how Washington works!!!! we dont do timelines" Then she said if there is no progress in 6 months on the NIH reform they might consider passing some dieaese specific legislation. I then informed her of how many more thousands of women would be told that have ovarian cancer and how many more would die in that time. That got her a little bit, but to no avail she is going to refer me to some individuals on the appropriations committee and advised me to contact local trade associations that would have a "stake " in the law. Seems like it's always back to the almighty dollar in Washington. So, that's where that's at, but I have just begun, so let's see what's coming next.......to be continued

An Update From the Political Front

I have been cooresponding with Congressman Ferguson's Health Legislative Assistant this past week. Unfortunatly, Rep. Barton has not been back to work for some time as he is recovering from a heart attack in mid December. I hope to be in touch this week with the appropriate staffers in his office.

I would encourage all of you though to at this point do some reading on Johanna's Law. Please take the time to CLICK HERE and see if your congressman or congresswomen are signed on as supporters. If not CLICK HERE and get information tocontact their office immediatly and voice your support. The Johanna's Law site has some great information on how to prepare for a conversation with these political officals.

The Johanna's Law is named after Johanna Silver Gordon who succomed to cancer after a long and brave fight. I have been and continue to be in close contact with her sister. Together, with the help of many others we know we will get this much neede law passed. So, to that end, do your reading, make your calls and let's get this law on the books.....

A Word From Mom's Oldest

By now anyone who has been keeping up with Mom's Support Page knows what's been going on during the past month...her good days, bad days, doctor's visits, and chemo sessions. Living almost 2 hours away from Mom is very difficult for me as she is going through this (Just ask my wife). I often feel that by being so far away I'm not as useful and helpful as my brothers, father and the rest of my family can be, because they are right around the corner. However, I realized that I've given her something that helps her to continue the fight... her three grandchildren, Scott (13), Meghan (9), and Noah (2). Mom has a saying, "I need my fix", meaning she wants to talk to or see the kids. We brought the kids up to see Mom on Saturday. Though she wasn't feeling her best, when she saw Scott, Meghan, and Noah, her whole mood changed. It's as if they do something for her that no medicine can. We spent about two hours with Mom. Sometimes she will call to get her fix. She'll talk to each of the kids on the phone a few times a week. Noah will tell her "Love you Mom-Mom" or "Noah vacuum" or he'll just giggle on the phone.

I know Mom has done a lot for a lot of people. Speaking for my brothers and father, Mom has been here for us for over 31 years. She's been there while we're sick, when we've had a bad day, to take us to school, and to pick Dad up from the train station late at night. Now it's our turn...all of us, family and friends to help Mom, to support Mom, and to give her back all she's given us. She's the strongest person I know. With her determination and our support, Mom's gonna kick this thing. I love you Mom!

Music to my Ears!

I won't be writing a whole lot today because my brother Gil had been wanting to post something on the page for a while so check back later for an update on the excitement at our house earlier today. But for a few quick updates. A few days ago we found out that mom's bloodwork came back negative, which is a very good thing! And just yesterday morning, the best thing happened! As I woke up I could've sworn I heard somebody yelling downstairs. I kind of rubbed my eyes to try and wake up more, and then I clearly heard someone cursing. I couldn't imagine who it was so I figured I'd go investigate. As I went downstairs and approached the kitchen, I saw Mom running around cleaning while cursing me and my Dad up and down for leaving her "such a crap house" (a term I've come to learn well over the years). Now most people might get upset by this, but it was music to my ears...Mom was back to normal! You see for the past week or so Mom was weakened by the chemo and wasn't doing much if anything around the house but laying down and trying to rest. This was the first sign of her recovery. Today she's feeling even better! Check out some new pictures.

A Surprise from NY

Everyone said from the very beginning that there will be good days, and there will be bad days. I think yesterday was a very good day. And I think what really helped mom yesterday was a surprise visit from her cousin Kenny Mackewicz (<--spelling?) from NY. He was in town on business and dropped in for about an hour. We had a few laughs, caught up on each others lives and had a nice afternoon. I could tell it really cheered mom up a lo. And I think the reason it helped was basically because it was a change a scenery (if not the pleasant company). I take no offense to the fact that mom is probably sick of the same old "mugs" moaping around the house for the past month. I don't blame her cause I probably would have lost it by now. But overall things are still going very well. This morning when I woke up I caught her doing a little more cleaning than she probably should be doing, but I think that's got to be a good sign. As of Tuesday, January 10th...
Mom is SMOKE FREE for ONE WHOLE MONTH!!!

It takes one strong person to quick cold turkey after 35 years!

This morning mom's hair stylist Jeff came over to style her wig the way she normally wears her hair. I don't know Jeff very well of course, but this guy is a saint. I don't know many hair stylists who would go out of their way (twice!) to make early morning house calls, do you?

Today mom is starting to feel some of the side affects of the chemotherapy that we had heard so much about.But the good news is that they are all very typical short-term affects of chemotherapy as opposed to rare unexpected symptoms. Another good thing is that she's really letting herself rest. I think it was extremely difficult in the begin to resign herself to a bed for a period of days or even weeks, but she's really taking it easy and allowing herself some good recuperating time. Hopefully she'll start feeling better.. Slowly but surely!

What is being done about Ovarian Cancer????

When I first heard the news about my mom’s cancer I went through the normal feelings of fear, sadness, disbelief and pretty much anything else you could come up with. Then as it settled in and we began to move through the steps of fighting her disease I had a new feeling. I felt powerless. There was really nothing I could do besides be there for her and my family.

As most of you know I am not the type to sit by and let the world go round with out me being onboard. So, I searched and looked and it soon became apparent that there were plenty of sites for ovarian cancer as my brother has already provided, but not too much about what’s being done to increase awareness. Then I came across Johanna's Law

Johanna’s Law is a currently a bill in the House that is in a nut shell a national awareness program for Gynecologic Cancers. It’s official name is Johanna’s Law: The Gynecologic Cancers Education and Awareness Act of 2005. The website offered information on how the bill was initiated, but left no updates on it’s status in the house. So last week I called Congressman Mike Ferguson of the NJ-7 and left a message for his Health Legislative Assistant whom I figured would not return my call.

Today, I surprisingly received a call from Mr. Tom Fussaro who is Congressman Ferguson’s Health L.A. We spoke at length for over 45 minutes about the bill, where it stands and what’s in it’s way of becoming a law. Apparently to keep it short and sweet this bill is being held up because the chair of the committee (commerce & energy) is not willing to move on any disease specific bills until they can pass reform with the National Institute of Health. There is a lot more to all of this then I am leaving here, but the bottom line is Congressman Joe Barton of Texas who is the committee chair is not willing to move until he gets his NIH reform which from what I have heard so far is much needed.

Over the next few days I plan to be in touch with Congressman Barton’s office as well as the office of Congressman Darrell Issa of California who created this wonderful bill. There is a lot to be done and a lot we can do as citizens. When I know more about who to contact and who’s office to bombard with mailings, emails and phone calls I will let you all know.

There is so much being done about so many other diseases, and now it’s time to add some new ones to the game. We need the doctors to be educated and aware of all the subtleties of ovarian cancer. We need the general public to be educated as well about the sign and symptoms so we have fewer deaths from this horrible disease. Today it is very rare to catch ovarian cancer in an early stage. The old saying about ovarian cancers was that it was the Silent Killer. Today though the slogan is a little different, Ovarian Cancer it’s not silent, it whispers. Today we know more about it. We know there are signs and symptoms that have gone unchecked so many times. So let’s see what we can do to change that name once again to something like Ovarian Cancer….used to be pretty bad, but now we have our act together and we just kick the crap out of it.

THE END OF CHEMO ROUND ONE Janice 1 - Chemo 0

Mom’s last day of chemo whet off without a hitch. She continues to enjoy her chocolate milkshakes, lemon marang pie and downs endless amounts of water each day. One new addition now is her lack of taste. She began to notice on her 2^nd day that there was a metallic taste added to her food, but she continues to eat a normal diet.

Last night she told me(Charlie) to pick up Andy and be at the hospital to get her this morning no earlier than 9AM. So, I got up around 7:50 and got in the shower. When I got out there were two messages on my phone and when I checked them they were classic Jancie. “Where are you…..it’s 8:00……They are releasing me. For those of you that don’t know my mom as well, she has a demented sense of time. When she says a party starts at 3, you get there for 2:30. When she says we’re heading down to Gil and Tina’s to see the kids by 11am, you’d better be in the car and ready to go by 9am. Aside from cleaning out the cancer I really hope this chemo can do something about her timing.

Any how, we got her home and she’s back to her old normal self. “ANDREW…Pick up the crumbs…..GILLLLLL……wipe off the counter”. The main goal now is to have her get as much rest as possible. On a slightly different note, tonight I get to give my mom a shot. After each round of chemo she’ll require a white blood cell booster injection to keep up her immune system. So tonight I get to get her back for all those years of “do this and do that”…..I recall a Wooden spoon when I was a child, but that’s a little blurry now. So here it comes mom. It won’t hurt but a moment.

Once special request from me…..Please keep my mom in your prayers. I have found that after doing some reading about the power of prayer and talking to many people, I have come to believe that the more people that pray for you the better off you are. Most of you problably already accept this as a given, but it took some time for me. So please, tonight keep my mom in your prayers.

Chemotherapy: Day 3

So mom has already had 3 days of chemo treatment and things are still going great. She is experience some minor side affects like a dry throat, a very minor loss of appetite, but no major problems by any means. Mom is most definitely in the right frame of mind and as determined as ever.

Only one day of chemo left before she comes home on Saturday and you know what that means... Nanny's coming by tomorrow to wipe the house clean top to bottom. Dad and I have definitely been cleaning up around the house, but "clean" means different things to different people. Thank God for Nanny! She's been the rock of our family throughout this whole ordeal and I do how we'd be where we are now without her.

I'm going to try and make some improvements to the site over the next few days (with the help of some Computer-literate family members) so be sure to visit frequently!

3 DAYS DOWN, 1 MORE TO GO!!!

Chemotherapy: Day 1

Mom went in at around 6:30am to start preparations for her first Chemotherapy treatments. For those of you who don't really know what chemo is I'd suggest checking out this website. http://www.chemotherapy.com/treating_with_chemo/treating_with_chemo.jsp But a quick definition would be "a series of treatments where chemical agents are administered systematically to stop cancer cells from growing. In mom's case, she's receiving her chemo through an I.V. There are many different types of chemo that are available to treat many different types of tumors and cancer. Given the fact that mom's tumor isn't found as often as other tumors, her chemo will be somewhat more aggressive so that they shrink every last bit that's still inside.

When I left the hospital at around 7pm tonight mom was her normal self. Well... that's not entirely true. She actually didn't threaten to call security on Dad today, but that's a different story! But she was feeling as healthy as ever and kept telling us that she was going to get through it no matter what. And I think THAT attitude is going to make all the difference. The doctors told us from the beginning that beating this cancer may be extremely difficult. That might be true, but the bottom line is that everyone is different and mom is living proof already that if you stay positive and you keep fighting, you can do anything!

One of mom's good friends who recently went through chemo gave her great advice to start cutting her hair shorter to start getting used to having less hair before she has to lose it all. Oh and while we are on the topic of hair, she just purchased her wig which is almost a dead match for her old haircut. She's gonna be the best looking baldy on the block!

Good news! Mom went to the doctor yesterday and found that all of her vitals are excellent and will be able to be treated with chemotherapy. Her treatments start on Tuesday morning (1/3/06) at Rahway Hospital where she is expected to stay for a few days to recoop.

I'm staying the weekend up in Sparta at Laura's house but when I get back on New Year's Day I'll try and get some pictures up. Happy New Year everyone!

Journal Entry 1: How this all began...

Earlier this fall, my mom Janice started to act a little bit out of sorts. For the past 22 years of my life, I have known my mother's routine to consist of waking at the crack of dawn, cleaning our house top to bottom, and running all over town before and after work on different errands necessary for our family. Mom did this all without breaking a sweat and without much time to rest. But sometime in November, she started to complain that she wasn't feeling well. She complained of nausea and some back pain. I should've realized right away that something was fishy because she rarely complained about being sick or tired, and if she did complain, it rarely slowed her down. Before you knew it, she wasn't running as many chores and would lie in bed for hours during the day. This NEVER happened before...ever! She would literally say "I can't believe those lunatics who lay in bed and take naps during the day!". This constant sickness and fatigue lasted for a few weeks but my mom fought it silently at home. About 2 weeks ago my mom finally revealed to the rest of us that for a few weeks her stomach had started to harden and expand. Her belly honestly made her look like she was 3 months pregnant. She had first told this to my dad and brother who convinced her to see a doctor right away. The next morning she woke in excruciating pain and was rushed over to Rahway Hospital. Three days later mom was told that she had Ovarian Cancer and had a hysterectomy.

As of today we are still waiting to find out when she will be starting chemotherapy and more specifically what kind (we will hopefully have some news on that by tomorrow). Mom is still her same old stubborn self and is ready to fight. Her strong spirit has already proven to work to her advantage because if you ask anybody that's seen her within the past week, they would all tell you that she does not look like somebody who just went through a major surgery only days ago. We're all real proud of her and will continue to be with her every step of the way.
